SU2 stuck at 'Geometry Preprocessing'

Hi,
I'm trying to run some simple simulations of an ogive in supersonic flow using SU2. I've created the mesh in Gmesh and modified the config file from the inviscid wedge tutorial (attached). The simulation has worked when I tried a wedge as in the tutorial (and even with complex multi-element wedges) but doesn't work for the ogive or any shape with a curved surface - it gets stuck at the 'geometry preprocessing' step (screenshot attached). I can't see anything that should make a difference in the simulation between the wedge and ogive so not sure why it's not working. If anyone could assist, that would be much appreciated. Let me know if i need to provide any more detail! Many thanks in advance, Costas |

In gmsh you need to create physical groups for all surfaces and volumes, and then when you export do not click "export all".
Upload your mesh. |

Thank you for your response. I tried that but then I get other errors. And the mesh file doesn't look right if I don't click 'save all elements'? See attached (it's a .su2 file but been converted to text for upload)
Thanks, Costas |

You have 0 elements, this typically happens when you forget to add the 2D domain/surface as a physical group. Please check this, if you have more issues then please post the .geo file.

Ok I've added a surface physical group and called it 'Surface'. The transfinite mesh seems to be fine? (the text file is too large to post and I don't think I can post a .geo file on here?).
But now because I have 'Surface', I get the error message 'config file has no marker definition for marker "Surface"'. Do I need to change something in the config file (attached) to accommodate this? Note, in the screenshot, the 'Wall' is the upper, lower and ogive lines. The 'Inlet' is the left line, and the 'Outlet' is the right hand line. Thanks. |

Hi, Please post the geo file as a .txt file so we can reproduce the issue. The surface should not be present as a marker, so there is still something wrong. Is the option 'save all elements' deselected?

Hi, ok I have attached it below. Yes the 'save all elements' is deselected when I export it to .su2.
Thanks |

If I load this geo file in gmsh and export it to an su2 file, then SU2 runs for the config file that you've sent earlier. Maybe it's now a matter of making sure that you're using the right files.

Ok, I will check my files. When you say the surface shouldn't have a marker, how can you create the physical group without a marker? I tried to run the files I posted that you have just run and I get this error (attached).

gmsh should not export the physical surface as a marker for 2D meshes. The only thing I did was load the geo mesh, click '2D Mesh' to generate the mesh, and then export to su2 format. When I inspect the su2 mesh, I only have 3 markers: inlet, outlet and wall.

Ok I have done that but it still has surface as a marker. However, I changed NMARK in the mesh file to 3 (from 4) so it doesn't count the last marker. It now works and I get results. Not sure why it still counts 4 markers but for the few simulations I'll be running, it won't be too onerous to change NMARK each time.
Thank you very much for your help! |

Nice to see that you figured out a way to produce the mesh! If you have some nice results for a validation case (comparison with literature values) or for a tutorial, then your contribution is more than welcome, just let me (us) know.
