Hi,

I would like to know if it is possible to measure the distance between two points in Paraview. Is there atleast a ruler that I can use to measure distances? I am using paraview 3.3

Also is it possible to reload files ? In the documentation for a older version I found that there is button to reload the file. But I don't see it in Praview 3.3. It would greatly reduce the time taken in closing the existing file and then opening it again, and then adjusting views etc. again.

Thank you

Prapanj

Hi Prapanj,

I could not find a direct way of measuring distance between two points. There are two work arounds>

- click streamline button. Then you can select "line source". This way you can see an interactive line with two end points, which can be easilty manipulated by mouse. This gives you the coordinate & then eucledian formula on calculator...

-Filter>Data Analysis> ProbeLocation
this way you can get the coordinates of a point interactively & then use your pocket calculator or excel sheet.

I know this is not an optimum way...

Hi Rishi,

Thank you for that tip.

It was really helpful, and it could solve most of my issues with measuring distances. But when I have to measure short distances like the vertical distance of the first grid point from wall ( to quickly estimate y plus), the coordinates shown are rounded off and I can't get the length.

I will keep researching.

Thank you
Prapanj

I dont have a round off problem. I am using foamToVTK & Paraview 3.4.0
I get pretty high resolution. I use the streamline way.

Hello Rishi and Prapanj,
I am trying to extract the distance between two points in my mesh. I am using Paraview 3.3. I tried to use the prob location tool. But i was not able to extract the distance, first of all i was not able to select the two points at all.
Could you please explain the method to use the probe location utility to extract the distance between two points more elaborately. Please it is very important for me to do this.

bye
with regards

Hello and a Good Evening,

Have you tried to use the "Ruler" functionality available under the menu option "Sourcees" ??

It gives you two points with a line between the two which can be placed wherever you want, and ParaView displays the co-ordinates, as well as the distance between the two points.

You can constrain the motion of the point you want to move such that it only moves parallel one of the axis vectors by holding "shift" pressed, and then clicking on the point, and dragging.

I think this "source" is provided with the intention of giving people a method of measuring the distance between two points, hence the name "Ruler".

Have a nice day!

Prapanj,

as an answer to your other question, you can reload both mesh and time data into paraView quite easily.

If you have re-run the simulation, simply click 'Refresh Times' in the properties toolbar.

If you want to reload your mesh, click 'Update GUI' and then 'Apply', both also in the properties toolbar.
