Howdy FOAMers!

Just two months ago I couldn't tell you the first thing about CFD, let alone OpenFOAM. After many trials and tribulations during my summer internship, I now feel as if I have a grasp on the software. The road block that I ran into time and again during my research was the lack of proper documentation. Of course, there are the user guide and tutorial cases, which are both very useful, but documentation is not at the same level as other software.

In the interest of increasing OpenFOAM knowledge, I attached a link to a download of a report and three cases I created this summer. You must note that I am an undergraduate student, was working solo, and had no previous knowledge of the software before early June, so what I documented isn't groundbreaking; however, something like this would have been invaluable to me in the beginning of my research. It is in essence a condensed version of the user guide mixed with my tips and tricks.

The three cases are as follows:
1. Air flow through a heated cylindrical mesh (one region)
2. Air flow through a heated iron pipe (two regions)
3. Air flow around a heated aluminum heat sink (two regions)

Please note the heat sink case is working incorrectly because the boundary conditions are not properly set-up for natural convection, but it is 95% complete.

Also, please note there may be random grammatical errors because the report is not 100% complete.

***I do have one request: If you look over the report, PLEASE leave me some feedback! If you are an advanced OpenFOAM user, I would be very grateful if you did so!***

Finally, the link: http://www.mediafire.com/?fbbwubvee36pfqf

best regards,
Matthew Nichols

I have been setting up an over 120pg OpenFOAM® tutorial collection for chemical engineers at my university... and I would be interested in merging your text with mine towards a more comprehensive tutorial collection. Therefore, one question: Is it possible for you to release the text under the GNU Free Documentation License (compatible with mine and further tutorials)?

Feeling the same, I was aiming at proper documentation, too; started the FOAM Documentation Project, that was thought as a community-driven project providing peer- and technical-reviewed documentation on OpenFOAM®. For this purpose, the necessary infrastructure (web-based content management system) and templates (LaTeX macros and class) were provided. However, now it is on hold due to putative trademark infringements claimed by OpenCFD® Limited. Details can be found here: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...shut-down.html.
For now, the OpenFOAM-Wiki as part of the OpenFOAM-Extend project is the place for documentation. Interested? For more information please have a look on www.extend-project.de at How-to contribute...

best regards,

Hi Matthew,

I'm very interested in this work. But I'm not able to download it from there. Instead I get a lot of quite interesting offers from beautiful woman on this website, but this is not what I'm looking for at the moment;-)
Is there a chance to provide this works on another server?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards

Howdy everyone,

I'm very happy that y'all are interested in the tutorial. I will be in contact with someone by tomorrow who can re-upload it. I would re-upload it right now, but I am away from the computer with the file. I apologize for the inconvenience.

best regards,
Matthew Nichols

Howdy everyone,

Oddly enough the MediaFire link is working today.

Here is the link to the Google docs of the report if it is not working in the future: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B93...ut=list&num=50

I strongly recommend trying the MediaFire link first because it contains the three case files, while the Google doc does not. Much of the report's appendix covers the case files, but having them will make understanding the report easier.

best regards,
Matthew Nichols
