I have been tasked with simulating flow-induced vibration in water pipes of various diameters and materials. Clearly this task involves CFD, FEM, and ultimately FSI (although only a one way coupling is likely to be required since pipe vibration probably will not be sufficient to meaningfully impact flow).

Given that I have no background in CFD, FEM or FSI, this has proven to be a rather difficult task. I was wondering if anybody had could point me to resources appropriate for tackling this problem from a hands-on perspective using OpenFOAM. Obviously I am in desperate need of a theoretical background, but this material is seemingly easier to find. Therefore, I hoped to start with a practical guide and read-up on theory as and when I become baffled by the practical guide.

You should refer to the User Guide for some basics on CFD first.
There are even three turorials which are described in detail.

Furthermore there comes a whole bunch of other tutorial cases with the OpenFOAM installation.

I haven't tried yet, but you may want to go for the combo Salome + Code Aster + Saturne. Salome is a pre/post processor, Code Aster is a structural FEM solver and Saturne a CFD code. Salome allows the coupling of Aster and Saturne, using the results of one as the input of the other (at will of course).
For impulse charges such as vibrations perhaps Dynela or Impact can suit your needs. They don't have CFD capabilities though.
All these softs are open source, free and in general available for various platforms (Linux is for sure, that I can tell you).

Thanks for the replies. I have been picking through the user-guide, though not cover-to-cover. I find it is useful for the mechanical aspects of running OpenFoam but does not do a particularly good job of explaining the algorithms upon which the solvers/models are based. It appears that pisoFoam with the LES turbulence model will do what we need on the CFD side, but I really have no reference material upon which to base this decision. Am I missing something in the OpenFoam documentation where it explains or references the implemented algorithms?

As for the other software packages, I'll check those out, but I would like to follow through with OpenFoam first.

In the OF Wiki there's a section called "papers" or something like that, where there's a list of all the papers, or at least the most important ones, related to the theoretical background of the methods employed:
http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Main_ContribPapers
http://www.foamcfd.org/resources/theses.html
I hope it helps.

Hi,
Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) has been done using OF.
If you look at presentations from openfoam workshop.
http://www.openfoamworkshop.org/2007...re_Interaction
This has been done on various ways for various problems.
http://powerlab.fsb.hr/ped/kturbo/Op...6/KaracUCD.pdf
you will also find FSI stuff with the tutorials of the OF "extend or dev Version"
As OF has also some FEM capabilaties in its code, you might try for some problems to solve CFD and FEM within OF.

Never managed to understand how to use.

maybe somebody can tell me howto use it.

Hello, I´m Oscar from Mexico.
I would like to learn how to get Fluid Structure Interaction with these softwares: OpenFoam, Salome 6.0, Saturne_Code or Aster.
I was looking for information and tutorial about FSI. I have this problem; I want the interaction between CFD and a structure pipe. Finally, I want to know these parameters: structure deformation, pressure change, temperature change, cavitation, turbulence and all flow parameters between fluid and structure.
