Hi to all,
First of all, I want to introduce myshelf. I'm an Industrial Engineer and I'm very interested on learning how to model a wind farm with OpenFoam. I have a nice background in Wind Energy (I'm advanced user of WAsP and WindPRO) and also I have quite good background regarding the "wind theory". I'm starting with openfoam, I've OpenFoam 2.1.1 installed with Ubuntu and I've read the User Manual as well I done the recommended examples. Also I've read several works regarding the modelling of wind flow over complex terrain using openFoam (i.e. Xabier Pedruelo, 2009 -someone has talked about this masters thesis in this forum). Does anybody knows a tutorial, that explains well... how to model a windfarm? (pre processing, solver and post processing) Any recomendations about solvers? Is there any custom solver for Wind Energy? I know that some "custom" codes are developed for modelling windfarms... like CFDWind 1.0 or O.F.Wind... Could anyone share this codes and the users manual? Are this codes free? Any help will be apreciated Thanks in advance to all and congratulations for this fantastic forum! |

Greetings BigLearner and welcome to the forum!
I'm unable to answer you directly, but I know of the existence of the SIG WindE: http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Sig_WindE SIG: Special Interest Group WindE: Wind Energy Best regards, Bruno

Hi BigLearner,
unfortunatelly I cannot answer your questions, but I can offer my help. As you, I am also at the beginning of using OpenFOAM. Until now, I have read a lot about OpenFOAM and I hope and guess that OpenFOAM is promising in the wind energy sector. If you are interested, we can share ideas and develop a strategy how to achieve our goals of using OpenFOAM. The best JoCo |

Hello BigLearner and the rest,
I attended the sigWind first meeting in the OpenFOAM workshop last year in Penn-state (2011), and after this years OFW in Darmstadt I continued editing the page. I can not say I am doing a very good job at it but I encourage you to put what you learn - if its is reference cases, best practices for control volume and boundary conditions etc. I put up my begginer stuff - which was emulating Martinez 2011 Msc work, and I will put up more stuff as i go along. At the moment i'm still patching up my python code, which will - based on the pyFoam python modules - make up my OpenFOAM wind farm simulation kit by the time i'm done. My current focus is implementing variable roughness, and I will probably start by copying what Xabier Perduelo published in his 2009 Msc, but I would rather turn it into a python module since it fits along with the other stuff im doing. Hanan. |

I am not using it for modelling wind farm but i use this model for openfoam.
You should have a look. http://wind.nrel.gov/designcodes/simulators/sowfa/ This openfoam model is coupled with a windfarm solver. Why I use it? because the documentation is clear, not like openfoam ... There is even a sound document for introducing the model, one of the disadventage is that its still not be made for complex land ... But could be a nice thing to start |

Yes, it should be very good, I have not used it - exactly because i am interested in complex terrain. I heard Mat Churchfield's lecture at the 6th openfoam conference, and will be happy if they adapt it to complex terrain - although at the moment I am using RANS and not LES, but in openfoam going from one to the other should be easy.
As to the conference - I want to go, hope I will get the funds from my mentor for it (or better yet - organize a group from my faculty!) Hanan. |

Please see the attached file for the all the message I have got from the compiling process. I am not sure where the problem comes from because I am new to OpenFOAM. Please help me to check the log file. Thanks again! |

Hi i am not such a pro in the installation program,
What i just see look like he don't find some file (but that i guess you find it) I remember i had some problems like that when i had install it, but it was because my openfoam was out of date for this program and my wmake too.. perhaps you could check it sorry if i cannot help you so much |

Hi *,
the error CALL RANDOM_SEED ( PUT=WaveSeed(1:2) ) 1 Error: Size of 'put' argument of 'random_seed' intrinsic at (1) too small (2/12) and the solution are discussed here: https://wind.nrel.gov/forum/wind/vie....php?f=4&t=540 I had the same error, but after following the instructions above it resolved. Have fun, Jörn |

Hi all, first I want to introduce myself, I am a meteorology student and I am trying to analyze the causes power losses of wind farm by modelling the flow through wind farm using OpenFOAM for my bachelor thesis. I use SOWFA to model the wind farm, but when i try to execute the Allrun on precursorABL/neutral i have some errors as i attached bellow.
error.JPG so can anybody explain why this happen? And what must i do to solve this? I am new to OpenFOAM and bash scripting. Thank you for your attention. Regards |

Hi all,
as elvis asked, is anyone participating in the Symposium on OpenFOAM in Wind Energy? http://www.forwind.de/sowe/Site/Home.html I'll be there and I would be glad to share some ideas? The Best JoCo |
