I am learning how snappyHexMesh works through a tutorial. I cannot share the PDF file due to copyright reasons, but I will provide you with all necessary details.

I am building up a mesh via defining a background mesh (using blockMesh) and snappyHexMesh

I am dealing with the STL 2D Mesh surface (I cannot uploaded because it exceeds the limit of the site).

My issue comes when I want to open it. When I run vi constant/triSurface/river.stl in the linux terminal I get the following messy output

https://ibb.co/k2nqc71

This might be because I do not have an installed software (in Linux) to open the file. I looked up how to fix the problem (introducing the commands recommended in the most upvoted answer here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/2473...ning-stl-files) but it did not work.

Any help is appreciated

Hi,

STL can be written in ASCII or binary formats. From the screenshot you have posted, it looks like you have a binary STL file and this is why you cannot open it with vi.

You can open your file directly into paraView.

There are plenty of other softwares able to open STL files, such as Blender, FreeCAD, MeshLab....

Cheers,
Yann

Thank you Yann. I indeed used paraView and it worked (more details here: https://www.physicsforums.com/thread.../#post-6599700).
