Hi Foamers
I decided to simulate scour and sediment transport using OF. However I have no idea which solver is suitable for my case my mesh file and my case picture were attached. first of all I am going to simulate laminar and turbulent flow around a cylinder and then going to simulate bed shape changes. I would be grateful if you give me step by step hints. Regards, Mohsen |

Hi Mohsen, Did you find the appropriate solver to do so? currently I have the same problem. please let me know if you could help me. Thank You, |

Depends on the approach you want to follow: to move the grid according to the Exner equation, an Euler-Euler approach, or Lagrangian ... in any case, some programming should be made. As far as I know, no "out-of-the-box" solver exists in OF

I prefer not to use mesh deformation to gain bed shape during scouring. Do you have any information on multiPhaseEulerFoam for using in scour modeling? |

I am doing the same in openFoam5.0. i have tried it twoPhaseEulerFoam,InterFoam. i have inserted sediment diameter there and thickness using setFieldDict but unable to see in paraview the sediment layer. Also i do not know how to calculate bedshear stress, scouring etc. Did you solve yours? Thank You |

You could also try the Liggghts which is used to couple a DEM particle code (LAMPS) with OpenFoam. As such, you could model a discrete sediment bed to observe the scouring.

Thanks for your suggestion.Would you please elaborate this with a example if you have time, this will be a great help. Are those things (DEM,Liggghts) are available with OF or i have to install it?sorry for my little knoledge. Thanks |

You need to have a working OpenFoam installation and then instal Liggghts. Compilation is a bit tricky, but it works. Afterwards Liggghts offers tutorial cases is a similar way to OpenFoam.

Have you checked the OpenFOAM solver developed by the guys at Grenoble? It is called sedFoam, I recently attented the OpenFOAM users meet and the solver seems really promising. I remember they did a similar study of scoud around a monopile/pole (not sure). However, I recall the computing time was quite high. Anyhow, check this out! http://servforge.legi.grenoble-inp.fr/pub/soft-sedfoam/ |

The documentation http://servforge.legi.grenoble-inp.fr/pub/soft-sedfoam/ is not up to date (work in progress), but i recently updated the official repository : https://github.com/sedfoam/sedfoam
In addition the cylinder scour testcase will be added very soon to the repository (you can see a very short animation of a pile scour simulation on the github page). You can discuss about sedfoam on this cfd-online thread : sedFoam: two-phase flow sediment transport model |
