The next major version of Caelus, 5.10, was released today. We’ll continue to stick to bi-annual releases with 6.04 coming next April. The big addition was compressible capabilities as well a new turbulence model class and updates to the function objects. Here’s a brief list:
  • New implicit pressure-based and explicit density-based compressible solvers
  • Multi-phase VOF solver with Lagrangian particle tracking for use with, for example, sub-grid bubble modelling
  • Very-Large Eddy Simulation (VLES) turbulence model class
  • Compressible turbulence models
  • Coherent structure LES model
  • Improved central-based interpolation schemes
  • Updates to the run-time post-processing library, function objects

There is a release notes PDF available on the download page with more descriptions. http://www.caelus-cml.com/download/

If you’re not already familiar with Caelus, it was originally forked from OpenFOAM. You can read more about it in the original announcement post. That means its free and open-source as well. The file formats are compatible but there have been many improvements to it such that it is now moving independently in its own direction.

We are happy to answer questions, technical or otherwise, by email: caelus@appliedccm.com or also follow Caelus on twitter @caelus_cml

Applied CCM is currently the maintainer and main developer of Caelus. If you’re interested in porting or developing your own application to Caelus, we’ll be happy to provide guidance. If you’ve developed a solver or model that you would like to include in Caelus that can be arranged and we’ll be sure to keep your copyright in your source files.

Thanks, Chris

I am running the tutorials in Caelus 4.10. The tutorials seem to run fine but I am not sure how to post-process the results. I downloaded paraview 5.0 and I tried to open the data files created by Caelus with no success. Any pointers will be appreciated,

Carlos

Carlos,

Create an empty file with an extension .foam in the case directory. ParaView will recognize the .foam file and load the case with it's OpenFOAM reader.

A quick way to do so from the terminal:

$> touch mycase.foam

Carlos,
At present Caelus uses the same mesh and results format as OpenFOAM. As Chris said just create a file with the extension .foam in your case directory.

If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us at caelus@appliedccm.com

Darrin

I have created a mesh in Gmsh. Can I use this mesh in Caelus 5.10? if so how?

Many thanks,
Carlos

Hi,

I am wondering when 6.04 will be released. Should I wait for 6.04 or install 5.10 now?

One thing I am interested in is VOF - LPT coupling. Also curious about what new features will be added in 6.04.

Hi Carlos,
Caelus 5.10 doesn't have a converter for gmsh. You have two options, port the gmshToFoam utility or wait a couple of weeks and use Caelus 6.04 as it will have a gmshToCaelus utility.

If you cannot wait send an email to caelus@appliedccm.com and I will send you the code for gmshToCaelus to use with Caelus 5.10.

Regards,
Darrin

Hi Pei-Ying,
Caelus 6.04 will be released before the end of April (this month). We are in the final stages of our test loop verifying all 9 supported platforms before producing the installers.

Regarding new features, the release notes will have a comprehensive list, but a brief outline is:

Top level solvers and utilities

1) Compressible solvers:
1a) cpbnsPIMPLE and cpbnsLTS now use limited/unlimited central flux formulation
1b) Addition of the dominant wave numeric flux for explicitiDBNSSolver

2) Combustion solvers:
2a) Introduction of reactingSolver with the Arrhenius rate chemical ODE solver. Caelus chemical mechanism format supported.

3) Utilities:
3a) gmshToCaelus

Library changes:
1) Numerous bug fixes, native and back ported from OpenFOAM versions.
2) Surface interpolation changes in support of TVD discretization: More detail will be provided in release notes.
3) Turbulence library:
3a) New SpalartAlamarasVLES model for both compressible and incompressible flows.
3b) Explicit control of near wall behaviour in VLES models.
3c) New gammaReTheta model for turbulent transition in incompressible flows.

We are always happy to listen to users views on future developments. Feel free to drop us an email at caelus@appliedccm.com.au to share your views.

Darrin

Many thanks for your reply. I was just wondering how can I port the gmshToFoam utility to be used in Caelus?

Carlos

Hi Carlos,
Read this blog article http://www.appliedccm.com/porting-a-...ver-to-caelus/ for the procedure of porting solvers and utilities to Caelus.

Thank you for your response. I think I will wait for Caelus 6.04. Caelus is very easy to use.
Many thanks again!
