Unzoned cells by SnappyHexMesh for a Multiregion Mesh

Hi fellow Foamers,
I am trying to generate a Mesh for a case where there should be two regions: solid particles, and the surrounding fluid (see geom.stl). Both regions are defined by single connected surfaces (attached in the case Mesh4sover_test_Castellate.zip). The issue here is that when castellating, SnappyHexMesh leaves unzoned some cells that cross the fluid-solid boundary more than once (see close2.png). This shouldn't be a major issue if you'd be able to modify cellZone groups. That way splitMeshRegions would work just fine. So far I have created the correct cellSets but splitMeshRegions would not accept anything else than cellZones to split the mesh into regions. Moreover, I tried to split the regions according to the faceZones (-useFaceZones) without success. I also tried -sloppycellZones option without success (see splitMeshRegions.png). I though of making a script to modify the cellZone file in /polyMesh, according to the appropiate cellSet I am able to extract using setSet. Do you guys/girls know any easier way to split the Mesh? You can download the case that I am working on from this address:

Hello mujika, I'm facing exactly the same problem when using snappyHexMesh with multi regions. Could you find an answer?

Hi Jose,
I gave up trying to split the mesh. Now I make two meshes with the same case: on one I set the location to be inside the geometry, and the other one outside. Bonus: You get meshes that are conformal. Good luck! |

Hey mujika, thanks for the quick reply.
I'm kind of giving up too...I've verified my STL files are ok (closed surfaces) and have run SHM with different parameters and the result is the same. I'll try your method, hope it works . |

Just to confirm if I understood the procedure:
In your case, you used a single STL file that defined the edges of your spheres. But how did you define the edges of the external half cylinder? Was that information also contained in the STL file? Or did you define the cylinder geometry in SHM? Regards, José Amigo |
