Win 7 64 bit Installer ???

Hi Folks =)

I downloaded what I thought was the installer from Sourceforge (after searching for "Win 7 version of openfoam") but I can't find an .exe file...???
I don't know beans about compiling and coding and all that (I don't even really know how to use the command prompt) =(
But I really need OF to simulate differently shaped buoyant objects in a water column (and that's why I found OF in the first place...)
Can anyone write me out a dummy's guide to installing OF? I tried wading through pages and pages of wikis but all seem to need me to know things I don't...I do have virtual box installed (a buddy helped me do all the steps for that =P )
Also, does OF have a GUI? Or maybe a real Win program would do? I just need to simulate the ascent rates of different buoyant containers in water columns of different heights and cross-sectional areas. So, for example, could I just draw out a 3D shape and state the liquid density, etc. and it will spit out answers?
Sorry for the looong first post. I really need this software bad--or something that does the above...

What is your background? CFD is not something that you can just try out on a friday afternoon and expect reliable results. Even for experienced users it is not easy to get reliable results for things like ascents rates. Why did you choose OpenFOAM? Maybe it is better to ask your boss to either hire a professional consultant, or to send you to a CFD/OpenFOAM coarse.

Thanks for your reply, Bernhard.
I was looking for a simulation program to test different buoyant container shapes and their accelerations in water columns. I did a google search and OF was what came up...I thought it was a GUI that i could input the shape and other variables and get my answer...guess I was wrong =(
I am an independent researcher and don't know anything about coding, scripts, command lines, etc. but I need to find an optimum container dimension and shape. Any ideas?

There is a wiki page at openfoamwiki.net that tries to gather a complete list of GUIs available for using OpenFOAM: http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/GUI

For optimization, most of the multidisciplinary GUI's listed there will support parametric studies.

Not much I can help you with, since you didn't even specify the full name of the file you downloaded and where from

Yesterday I took the time to update the wiki page regarding GUI's and also regarding OpenFOAM on Windows: http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Windows
With any luck, you'll find directions to the instructions you're looking for.

By the way, did you try looking in Youtube for instructions on how to install OpenFOAM and Virtualbox and so on?

Hey Bruno,

I mentioned that it was from sourceforge. The name of the main folder when unzipped is OpenFOAM-2.1.x and there are a few batch files along with it. Inside the main folder are three folders: bin, etc, and lib.
I'll check out the updated wiki and thanks for the suggestion to look on youtube.
But even if I do install it, I get the feeling it will require coding and scripting knowledge to simulate what I want (please see earlier posts). Or does it have a ready to go simulator for buoyancy and all that?

There are currently 4 projects on SF.net that provide some sort of port of OpenFOAM for Windows

When one is not familiar with a particular software, one should have a look into its manual

Have a look at the first tutorial (of three) in the OpenFOAM User Guide: http://www.openfoam.org/docs/user/cavity.php
Therefore, even though OpenFOAM does have a few buoyancy-based solvers, you'll need to go through steps like those on the User Guide.
As for the optimization part, you'll then have to learn how to use Dakota and possibly pythonOCC.

I did try to look into how to install and use the program but I was faced with about 40 links on one page I found alone :P
At least you've directed me to the pages I should be reading, so thanks.
I may not have the time to learn a language, but if it can simulate a few different shapes out of the box then it should be worth installing it.
I'll post again if I really get stuck...lol
