Hello,

I would like to give here a small guide (neither perfect nor exhaustive) for OpenFOAM beginners about how to prepare an OpenFOAM case.

The aim is to speed-up the understanding of OpenFOAM.

Here it is:

  1. Choose a solver compatible with the case to simulate: http://openfoam.org/docs/user/standard-solvers.php#x13-890003.5

  2. Look for an existing case in the OpenFOAM tutorials cases (installed on your computer at the same time than OpenFOAM itself, in the $FOAM_TUTORIALS folder) being the closest to what you want to simulate.

  3. Change the simulation parameters in the system/controlDict file (start time, end time, time step, such things - see http://openfoam.org/docs/user/controlDict.php) and constant/* files (fluid properties, turbulence model, such things - see http://openfoam.org/docs/user/models.php).

  4. Create a mesh thanks to blockMesh (http://openfoam.org/docs/user/blockM...#x25-1420005.3) or snappyHexMesh (http://openfoam.org/docs/user/snappy...#x26-1510005.4) or import an existing mesh (http://openfoam.org/docs/user/mesh-c...#x27-1600005.5).

  5. Modify the type of boundaries in constant/polymesh/boundary file (http://openfoam.org/docs/user/boundaries.php).

  6. Modify the boundary conditions + initial condition in the first time folder (eg. 0). See http://openfoam.org/docs/user/boundaries.php.

  7. Launch the solver.

  8. Post-process with paraFoam.

Here is a tutorial :

http://openfoam.org/docs/user/cavity.php#x5-40002.1

Hope this will help people.

Best regards,
