Hello everyone,
I was hoping to ask for a guidance about simulating rock fracture within OpenFoam.
My research is focused on developing numerical methods for dynamic rock fracture. And, I’m very interested in OpenFoam, which is based on continuum mechanics. But, I would like to investigate rock fracture within OpenFoam. I noticed OpenFoam has been developed in crack propagation, hydraulic fracture and other fracture problems. But, I’m a newcomer to OpenFoam, and still confused about whether OpenFoam could be used to investigate rock fracture, like modeling uniaxial compression test. If it does, what are the challenges in terms of simulating rock fracture within OpenFoam?
Hope to receive suggestions of everyone.
Best regards,
Zhang

Hi Zhang,

Welcome to the forum!

Would it be possible to give a link or attachment to the type of uniaxial compression test you are talking about?

Hi Philip,

Thanks for your reply.

Hi Zhang,

I am not sure if it will work for this problem but it is possible to model cracks.

You can try out the following tutorial in solids4foam: solids4foam/tutorials/solids/fracture/crackingBeams
