Hello
I am meshing a full aircraft. For practice, I am just working with a simple straight wing. I have a doubt regarding the trailing edge geometry. What is the standard/ recommendation/ best practice for the trailing edge of a wing? How does a blunt TE compare with a sharp TE? I want to make the mesh in ICEM. I will be performing a comparison between structured and unstructured meshes. Could anyone point me in the direction of any literature for the same? |

wings with sharp trailing edges couldn't be manufactured due to material limitations, that's why engineers used blunt trailing edges in the past since your comparison is between structured and unstructured meshes (I'm assuming this is not for a serious research project, but just for educational experiments), you can use whatever trailing edge you want if you're preparing for a job interview, or for a career in CFD, and this is your college work, it might be better to do both, and gain more experience. |

Trailing edges (or any edge for that matter) are more often than not modeled using sharp singular edges in CFD. The bluntness of the edge is usually orders of magnitude below the typical grid resolution that is even practical, even if it was interesting. It also kills your grid quality, generates a lot of skewed cells, which hurts your results numerically. Generally, people avoid blunt edges in modeling. Because as soon as the bluntness of the edge is even important, well then we have to talk about what the characteristics of the bluntness are and how the edge was broken in the first place. Is it actually blunt or is it rounded? etc.
