Hello all,
I thought I would reach out to the CFD community for some ideas on some exciting/engaging/interesting flow problems that you would like see computed. The idea is that we could simulate them and then put the setup/results online for free. It would not be for commercial value, but rather for pure interest. Emphasis would be on qualitative information (flow vis, not publishable quantitative data). Ideas that came to mind were flow around popular vehicles (sports cars, aircraft, ships, rockets, etc.). I was thinking of an SR-71 Blackbird cruising at Mach 3.3 or a DeLorean at 88 mph. What CFD flow solution would entertain the most people? |

Don't forget about classic fluid flow cases:
* Flow over a cylinder - forms a vortex street which is mesmerising * transition to turbulence * Flow of a jet * Flow of a liquid jet into air forming spray The detail and fidelity of a good CFD simulation of these cases is why I got interested in CFD in the first place. |

Hi
I am a PhD student at the University of Kentucky. I am working on modeling multiphase flow inside a vortex chamber. Free surface / interface is used to capture the dust particles from an underground mine atmosphere. CFD simulations are complex and exciting! |

Interesting thread !
Here is my favorite 'dream simulation': A high resolution LES simulation of a F5 tornado with photorealistic visualization. Simulation resolution: 2048^3 grid cells, rendered at full HD resolution in 3D stereo Bonus: physically simulated sound of the tornado via high mach number compressible flow simulation |

Research the fastest (non ridiculous) way to cool a can of beer/pop.
This was on Mythbusters and I think they did a horrible job. My theory is to sit the can down horizontally on ice cubes or snow and spin the can. I think it should spin one way for a certain time, then the other, back and forth. I'm pretty sure you can get it cold in less than a minute this way, which is much faster than anything they did on mythbusters. |

Maybe an absurd idea, but giving some performance figures for the Homer's car design would be in some kind of interesting
