Hi,
I have atrouble,
when Kaspersky is on none of the browsers can connect to internet.so I have to turn it off when am in Internet.
but it seems it has taken a virus.
when I open my word file,the captions I have made for chart,image and equation isn't there on the caption list.although captions under them there are in the text( but there name I have set in the list has lost) and when I use ctrl+p for update captions,the cross-references I've set in the text are not regognised and when I change even one of them to refer to true object and want to save the word,it takes a long time and closes itself without saving.
when I open it again,a save file is shown to the list but it can't be saved even with rename the file.
then I can't change anything about captions. and also a new style has been created for titr of sessions as well as what I was using.
I scanned with kaspersky and it detects a threat but don't do anything to delete it,I don't know why.

As I wrote on the email, this is one of those bugs that are pretty common in Word. Nowadays this should be less common, but it can still happen if you use the "Save As" option and use an older Word format. These kinds of details can be missed in the export to an older format, therefore leading to the problem you're seeing.

If my suspicion is correct, that style came from the export to an older format.

When an anti-virus detects a virus or potential threat, but does not give an option to remove the virus from the affected file, that usually means that there is no known fix for the infection, or at least not yet. Usually the solutions are to either delete the file completely, or to store the file in the quarantine section until a cure is known.


For future readers, this is what a part of what I had already sent Ehsan over email:

[...] the problem in Word seems something very normal to happen in Word: it can easily loose references in the document, specially if you do not use the same format when saving. I say "format", because DOCX currently has got 2 or 3 variants (2007, 2010 and 2013) and then there is the old DOC from 1997. Therefore, be very careful to not use multiple versions of Word and to not use "Save As" in more than one format.

And another detail is: never only save to a single file. Always keep backups of your documents every day or even every hour, because Word and LibreOffice Writer are known to sometimes fail miserably in properly saving documents.


If it's a virus problem, you can try installing ClamAV in Ubuntu and then use it to try and search for viruses in your machine. But there is no guarantee that it will be able to catch the virus, specially if it's a very recent virus.

Hi dear Bruno,I use the same format for saving(DOCX) and have word 2010 installed.I have installed some add-ins in the word 2010,may it be because of them?

I have no idea. All I can suggest is to use the divide-and-conquer strategy, namely to try and isolate one issue at a time.
Removing all add-ins might be a good place to start with. If it solves the problem, begin adding back one by one and testing in between.

But if there are virus going around in your computer, it's best to take them out first.

I think it's best to at least try and check if manually correcting the references, will fix the problem. You don't need to correct them all in a single go, you can do a couple of them, save with another file name, close the file and then open it again to check (with the help of Ctrl+P) if the 2 references are still safely stored.

Don't forget to keep daily backups of your thesis document, with related names - for example "Thesis 2014-01-16.docx" - so that you can more easily trace missing references.

In addition, you should be able to use the "Save As" feature in Word for saving the document into PDF format, which enables you to more easily look for any broken references.

WARNING: PDF format is (usually) read-only, so this is only as good as printed paper! If by any chance you loose the original DOCX files and only have the PDF files, you'll have to manually recreate the document, with some help of the "copy-paste" feature.
