Hi everyone, my laboratory recently think about to buying a new workstation to do CFD simulation,we use Star-CCCm+,we have two specification Tables,

1.Intel
CPU: CLX-SP 5220R 24C/48T 2.2G *2
memory: 32GB DDR4-2933 2Rx4 LP ECC RDIMM *4
GPU: GeForce GTX 1650 AERO 4G OC
Power:1200 W 80 PLUS® Platinum-level efficient fixed

2.AMD
CPU: Rome 7282 DP/UP 16C/32T 2.8G *2
memory: Samsung 32GB DDR4-3200 2Rx4 LP ECC RDIMM *4
GPU: ASUS DUAL-GTX1650-O4G PCI-E
Power:1280 W 80 PLUS® Platinum-level efficient fixed

After I looked up the information,I know that memory bandwidth is important to CFD simulation, the Intel CPU I searched has 6 memory channels and the AMD CPU has 8 channels,so I want to know which system is better?

Intel has more cores but AMD's memory bandwidth is larger than Intel and it's 2nd Gen EPYC with PCIe 4.0 x128

It seems both configurations have 4 memory modules. If this is correct then I suggest that you chose neither. You need 12 memory sticks for the Intel system and 16 sticks for the AMD system (see below though) in order to populate the memory channels correctly.

Also, I am not sure that the Intel system can manage 2933 memory.

Epyc 7282 does not have 8 effective memory channels. Pick 7302 instead.

So two bad choices from your vendor.

True that. I sometimes wonder how these system integrators justify their markup, when you still get a system that is mis-configured for your needs. Or generally a mismatch like more expensive DDR4-2933 for a CPU that tops out at DDR4-2666.

Also, those Xeon CPUs are about 1700€ each. A better match in terms of price would be Epyc 7352.

That's nice to have, but you probably won't need it.

Exactly! Or doing the opposite and wanting to use 2666MHz RAM in a CPU capable of 2933. Just Trying to get rid of their old stock maybe?

At my workplace, (several thousand employees), I believe we have some contract with DELL (through a third party) and have a few options for standard computers based on worker needs: Admin, standard desktop, high-end desktop, Engineering etc.
Well the most expensive one "Engineering Workstation" is only configured with 2 DIMMs, of the wrong frequency, and better yet, the C:/ is a 2.5" 500GB Spinning Disk Hard Drive which is made for a laptop!
And This garbage costs over $2.5K USD
Dell Precision T5820
CPU: Intel i9-10900X
Graphics: Quadro P4000
Memory: 2x16GB @ 2666MHz
Internal Storage: 2.5" 500GB 7200rpm Hard drive
Additional Storage: 3.5" 1TB 7200rpm Hard drive

I hope we haven't scared off OP by taking a dump on the proposed setups. I.e. I hope they were suggested by the vendor, not picked by himself

Yeah, I hope so as well. CFD-Online should be a friendly forum. However, our impression was that the suggested configurations were vendor based. I hope this is clear for @momop. =)
