Good Evening, I am a Mechanical Engineering student from Malaysia. I have been given a project that involves performing Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) for laser cutting process on a solid. I am struggling a lot to begin with the simulation as I am new to CFD simulation.

Is it possible for any experts to guide me on how to do the User Defined Function (UDF) code for laser cutting in ANSYS FLUENT. Besides that, I am required to do Grid Independence Test for laser cutting process as well. I am unsure on how to do the Grid Independence Test for laser cutting process. I have done for a fluid flow through a pipeline but never once done for laser cutting process which involves thermal.

I have done few research regarding this online; However, there are very minimal reference available for simulation for laser cutting process and there are barely any reference for UDF code for laser cutting.

It is a kind request from me to help me guide for this simulation as this will really help me graduate. Thank you so much in advance.

Regards,
Tharushan

Why did you choose Fluent as a tool to simulate laser welding?

Talking about laser welding in CFD you are going to use VOF (volume of fluid) model most likely to simulate keyhole

approaches from videos and CFD are very different

Good Day Sir, the simulation is carried out to analyse the kerf formation on the workpiece and behavior of workpiece to different parameters of laser beam for laser cutting sir. As for the simulation, i am required to use VOF using multiphase in CFD sir. I have done the cad modelling and meshing of model, I am currently stuck with the UDF code which is a key element to solve the problem.

Hi, did you manage to find answer, how to model the laser cutting process using Ansys?
