I've seen a few papers talk about how ‘Incident Radiation’ or ‘Surface Incident
Radiation’ that is available as a field variable from Fluent is not the measurement one would want to use to obtain how much radiaiton a flame is giving off. For example, if I wanted to make a virtual radiometer in Fluent, what variable should I check over a small area to see what the incoming radiaiton is from a large fire?

"One should note that the ‘Incident Radiation’ or ‘Surface Incident
Radiation’ that is available as a field variable from the CFD
software is not the radiation intensity that is of interest.
Manipulation of the field variables is required to obtain the proper
value for post-processing."

I am trying to compare my CFD data for a large flare simulation with experiment. This includes calculating the radation to several remote targets (radiometers) around the fire at various distances. What variable should I monitor or compute to determine the radiation from the fire to the targets?

If you are using a virtual radiometer, then surface incident radiation is the variable you want because you are not measuring how much radiation the flame is producing, but how much radiation arrives at your meter.

Is there a tool to create "virtual radiometers"? Right now I'm just creating small square plane surfaces within my domain and preforming surface integrals etc. Can I not compare the incident radiation values before and after the flame is present?

There isn't a tool. You have to create points/surfaces like you are doing. It's not important to replicate the shape of a radiometer. Actually the radiometric principle is to measure the radiant flux and the radiometer device is trying to mimic your small square that you are creating.

It's fine to compare incident values before and after the flame, because that's what you would do with a radiometer anyway.
