Hello CFD community,
I already posted this on another forum here but since I am working in Fluent I figured I should post it here too!
I am currently working on modeling flow through a butterfly valve when it is open/closed and at a few other angles. I have gotten the closed version to work and now I am trying to get the open version to work using the same model (Laminar flow, 1-inlet/1-outlet, same flow velocity, same solving methods). However, after multiple attempts I keep getting results that are inf (look at picture below titled 'contour prob'). My continuity is going off the charts so I assumed to change my mesh and make it a higher density, but to no avail. I have tried multiple meshing attempts all different so I am not sure if this is the problem anymore.

Could anyone provide insight onto what may be causing this? Like I said the closed version worked and now all I did was turn the valve to be open in SpaceClaim.

Hi, the link not open. I think it is better attach images of your mesh and case setup here.

As rwoolhou suggested, you should see the mesh quality. What mesh building program you are using?

Another thing, your element growth rate is very high. Try reduce this to 1.1-1.3

I am using the ANSYS Fluent meshing program.
My growth rate for the surface mesh is 1.2
The growth rate for the Volume Mesh boundary layer is 1.2
And I am using poly-hexcore for my volume settings.
So all my growth rates are already between 1.1-1.3, is there another one that I am missing?

Ok. I'm not familiar with Fluent meshing, I use ICEM cfd. In ICEM, there is an option to associate the first element of a mesh zone with the last element of another zone, so the transition becomes smoother. Try to see if in Fluent meshing you can see this. In my view, you have some regions with elements that are very large relative to the wall regions. Have you looked at quality by clicking on the "Quality" icon under "Setting Up Domain"? The minimum Quality, if I'm not mistaken, must be 0.01.
