Importing complex terrain

Dear fellow forumers,
I am currently doing my thesis that involves modelling a flow over a complex portion of terrain of the island of Madeira, Portugal. For that, I am using Fluent, a software in which I only have basic knowledge. So far, I am still in the phase of importing the x,y,z coordinates of the terrain. I am talking of about 2 800 000 points in a region with a length of 42km in the x direction and 52km in the y direction (easting, northing format). I looked for the appropiate ways to arrange the data in a .txt file in order to import it to either space claim or design modeler but it is not working. Which one would you recommend in my situation, space claim or design modeler? Can they even handle such a big ammount of points? Do you have any suggestions? In the link provided you can find the original file of data obtained from the Global digital elevation map. You can also find the files with the data arranged to be imported in space claim and design modeler. In the fourth file I altered the space claim file by relating all the values to a coordinate system with zero in the origin. I thought the issue could be related to this as in the original file, the origin of the coordinate system (bottom left corner) was (312883.32m, 3599063,18m) because I am dealing with easting/northing coordinates. Joao,
I took your original .dat file (120MB) but used only the first ~40 points and it worked fine. I would suggest reducing the file by 80% (i.e. only keep 1 of every 5 points) to try it out first. When you copied it over to Excel, did you make sure that the precision (after the decimal point) was not truncated ? Regards, Arnie |

I was able to reduce the resolution from about 2800000 to 70000 points.
It is working now but I discovered that in my version of the software, the limit of imported points is 10000. Do you have any idea if this has to do with the fact that it is a student version? |

I don't know if the student version limits the number of imported points. But the student version is going to limit your analysis to 512 000 elements too. I don't think this will allow you enough accuracy for your study/analysis to be particularly meaningful or accurate. Arnie |
