why we use c-shape airfoil mesh?

Hi guys,
I have a confusion about the airfoil mesh. please see the picture: In the mesh above, the outer mesh is a box. But it have an O-grid around the airfoil. In this mesh, the outer mesh is half cylinder. Usually we use the second one, but I dont know why. Thanks for your hints. Best,

The whole Airfoil can be simply viewed as a C shape couldn't we now? Therefore, people use C-grid to align the grid from Far Field until Airfoil. It improves the skew and orthogonality of the mesh. But to be honest, You can have a H-O grid or a C-O grid or an O-O grid and if you know your game of meshing upto quality then it does not matter in my view. I might be wrong, but I have never had any problems since I have employed all these type of grids for different airfoils and still got the same results. Let's see what others think now |
