Hi to all,
for my thesis I have to simulate a kinetic turbine in a open channel. I would use flow3d with GMO coupled motion. How I can find the rpm (and the drag force) of the turbine, if I know only the velocity or the mass flow in the input boundary condition? Thanks Giuseppe PS. Sorry for my bad english... |

hi, siuseppe,
i'm interested to your method testing the turbine with GMO coupled motion, can you give me your prepin? i'm testing a darrieus model turbine but still can't figure it out how thanks, simon |

http://www.flow3d.com/pdfs/tp/wat_en...bine-49-10.pdf I impose an opposite torque (C [Nm]) and the software simulate the rotation speed (omega [rad/s]). Then multiply the omega*C you can find the power [W]. |

simulating a Darreius turbine should be quite straightforward, some users already did it.
Is it 2D or 3D? 3D will be quite mesh consuming. |

dear stefmascio, i'm testing the 3D model, actually it is a hybrid turbine, darrieus turbine with savonius turbine |

a part for the mesh, that for a 3D I guess it will be huge, setup would not be so complex: set 1 fluid with no-sharp interface, air, wind speed, and set the hybrid turbine as a GMO with coupled motion.
Eventually, you can add an external torque. Keep an eye on the output: Probe -> General history -> torque and angular velocity in case something seems wrong. You can check if a torque is applied and if the rotation rate is not= 0. |

dear stefmascio,
i using water as the fluid because this turbine used for a tidal turbine and i have the problem in the water velocity. Everytime i test it there no water flowing in my mesh after i give some specified velocity. About the torque, if we fill it can the turbine spinning with specified velocity?( i mean spinning automatically) thanks a lot if you can answer it |

I don't know why your water doesn't flow, it is quite strange if you setup a "specified velocity" inlet boundary condition and your domain is filled with fluid. You can do a 2D rendering with vectors to check if you have some vectors at the inlet boundary that points inward.
About the torque, yes it is like you say: if you specify a torque or an angular velocity, then the object will rotate following your constraint, and surrounding water as consequence. Quote:

dear stefmascio,
i setup a specified velocity in x min in the boundary and setup the outflow in x max, doesn't it make the fluid flow through the mesh? and just like you said most of example i see is 2D rendering that's why i'm quite confused about the 3D setup |

Does anyone have an idea about how to do a simulation such that shown in the attached movie using FLOW 3-D? If possible, please provide us with a prepin. file.

Hey did anybody of you used flow-3d for simulation of current or wind turbines...is flow-3d good or accurate enough for such simulations.... because even i want to use it too for a similar study....i know this thread is too old..but if anybody can share their experience,it will be very helpful...
