What are the steps for setting up a 2D simulation in Converge? I've seen this option mentioned in some documentation but never seen it in practice.

Is there a predefined process for this?

Thanks.

Hi Pndsc,

There are a few things to consider when setting up a 2D simulation in CONVERGE:
  • The geometry will need to be a 3D surface such that the 2D flow occurs in the X-Y plane and there must be some finite thickness in the Z-direction. (Flow in the z-direction is prohibited for 2D simulations)
  • The 2 boundaries in the X-Y plane (separated by some thickness in the z-direction) must be identical in size and triangulation.
  • The 2 boundaries in the X-Y plane must be set to "TWO_D" boundary types
  • Prepare the remainder of your simulation in the same way as a 3D simulation. As long as the "TWO_D" boundary types are selected, CONVERGE will ensure the simulation is in 2D
  • You cannot perform 2D simulations that have moving boundaries or spray modeling

Thank you,

Hi Allie Le Moine,

I want to simulation a two_d case at cylindrical coordinate system. I used a 3D surface which is a sector (angle is 5 deg.) actually. The rotational axis is y axis. I have clicked on the 'Has rotational axis' box when setting up BOUNDARY. However, when CONVERGE run this case it had an error that 'the normal directions of TWO_D boundaries must be aligned in z direction'. Can CONVERGE run this kind of TWO_D case?

I am forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

Nana
