how to create .def file in cfx

hi
I am doing analysis over the car body in ANSYS 12.0 CFX , I have chosen symmetry for the car model and have created a domain with inlet, outlet, symmetry wall, free walls and the car body. I have applied all the boundary conditions in the CFX - PRE stage. Now how can I write SOLVER (. def ) File and how to run the process. Please any one help me in this regard. thank you |

go to Tools>Solve>Write Solver input file
Start solver manager, select the definition file to solve it. More details in help manual! |

In CFX12, you should insert an execution control and a configuration. The configuration will define which flow analysis will run in what sequence. The execution control will define path and name of your def file.

thanks a lot i have got the results, actually i have designed a basic race car in Pro - E my project is to compare two softwares Phoenics and Ansys ( fluent or cfx) i have done the analysis in Phoenics and have got max pressure value as 650 Pa for 31.30 m/s and for 300 iterations and i got drag coefficient value as 0.36 (domains are not same ) but in fluent and CFX i have done my analysis for the same speed and iterations but the maximum pressure is 1114 Pa so i have struck in the middle and more over in fluent or CFX can we find drag coefficient...........? please help me in this regard thank you |

Is maximum pressure important?
Drag coefficient is probably more important. Do you have experiments to compare against? If not, you should get some benchmark cases (maybe the Ahmed test body) and make sure you can model that accurately before you compare CFD codes. |

Are you running the CFX pre inside Workbench??
If yes, the write def file for solver wont be available. You should add another block for the solver and drag the case file into it. |

I use the ANSYS workbench 14 I do not understand what should I do please explain clearly what is the block ? your mean is another CFX solver ? Best Regards |

Sorry, Its been so long since I used workbench that I forgot.
In the "CFX" block you should click on "Setup" to enter the CFX-Pre and just setup your case. After that just close the CFX-pre window, and on Workbech double click on the "Solution" item on the CFX block. This will start the solver, you dont need to write a def file this way, only if you are running CFX outside the workbench environment |

You only need to create a .def file when running a stand alone CFX Pre (which I prefer)
When running inside Workbech, the .def file will be created automatically. After setting up the case on CFX-pre, just double cick the "solver" item on workbench |

Hi All,
question: does CFX write a licence information to *.DEF file? the reason I ask is that-I was told that by Cluster' Administrator that I can not use *.DEF file which was created on another licence (PC). Thanks |

Maybe he means that it is in a different version (def file CFX version newer than cluster version ).
Never heard that CFX writes licence info on def files, It doesn't make much sense doing so. Last edited by lffabiani; January 19, 2013 at 22:08. |

Def file will not contain any licence information and can be transferred between different platforms. I often make them in Linux and run on Windows or vice versa. The only problem would be if it was created with a different version. I think they are supposed to be backwards compatible, but if you use a newer version it may not work with an older version of the solver if the feature you are trying to use is not available.
