Hello,
I need to model a porous medium with the volume of about 1 cubic kilometers and run CFD simulations for it. In my simulations I need to study heat flux and pressure drop considering that latent heat transfer happens in the porous medium (phase changes happen e.g. ice formation). I am writing to ask which ANSYS product would you recommend for my case? I am debating between Fluent and CFX. Looking forward hearing your recommendation. Regards, Negar |

Hello Svensen,
Can you also please let me know why you think Fluent is better to use? Thanks for your reply. Negar |

If you ask a cfx user he will say cfx is more userfriendly than fluent and if you ask a fluent user he will say that fluent is more userfriendly. I like the gui of cfx way more than fluent but it depends on your personal preference.
Fluent uses a classic finite volume method where the quantities are stored in the cell while CFX save all the quantities in the nodes and then using some function to interpolate that over the cell. Therefore (in theory) CFX can get the same result as fluent on a corser grid but with longer calculation time. In CFX you can only use the coupled algebraic method to solve the governing equations of motion while in fluent you can chose between density-, segregated- and coupled-pressure-based methods. You should be able to reach the same accuracy in both programms. I personally think that its not that big difference between the two programms in engineering application, just take a look at some tutorials and choose the programm with the gui you like more, they should both be capable of solving your problem . One thing you should consider in your choice is that some (mostly fluent users) people say, that fluent is better in solving multiphase and phase change but to be honest i have no idea why. |
