Why do I see no mesh when I perform "File/Import Mesh/Fluent/" and select a .cas file? The .cas file contains a mesh. But it is scaled (x0.001), so maybe it is too small to see in ICEM? Or is it that I must have a corresponding geometry in order to visualize an imported mesh in ICEM?

Yes, you can see and work with mesh all on its own in ICEM CFD. Geometry is not required, but it does make things easier. Geometry can be extracted from the mesh.

But you need to import the *.msh file which actually has the mesh info. The *.cas file is more about the setup, etc.

I was hoping to extract the mesh from the .cas file as fluent had modified the mesh, (dynamic refinement), and i wanted to use the refinements to engineer a new mesh.

The .msh file which i have is the original input to fluent, which i still have in the form of an entire icem project too...

so, importing a .cas file into ICEM won't communicate the mesh to ICEM?

in any case, thanks!

Oops, my bad... I had personally always imported the msh file and was not aware that we could import cas files also. Even after all these years, I am still learning more about what ICEM CFD can do.

Anyway, I tested some .cas file examples and had no problem with Import Mesh => Fluent and selecting a case file.

So then why are you having a problem? I spoke to the developer (showed her your Post) and she said...

"in general it is possible to import a fluent .cas file into ICEMCFD.
This is either a simple display problem (==> press 'Fit Window' Button), or some other problem with the import reader.
It could also be that this is a bug that is fixed in the meantime (Onyx 109518)."

That particular defect she mentioned was one found on Linux...

Anyway, if you are not just having a simple display problem (user error), we could take a look at your model (confidentially) and see if we could reproduce the problem. Let me know if you would like to try that.

Hi,
Hope you are doing good. Actually I have the same problem. I cannot see the mesh in Cas File in Ansys Fluent. Would you please give me some advice?
best

Not quite the same problem... This thread was about not seeing it in ICEM CFD... An ANSYS meshing tool.

If you are having trouble seeing it in Fluent, that is different. Maybe put your question (with more detail since this is not enough) on the Fluent users forum.

Best regards,

Simon

Did this problem get fixed?

I too am trying to export a mesh from a Fluent .cas file. As the mesh has been changed within Fluent (with adaption) I need to export the mesh as a .msh file to use in other software.

I cannot open the .cas file in ICEM. It is quite large - about 550MB - does that matter?

You can import .cas file in ICEM CFD as Simon had already explained very well.

In essence .cas file contains mesh + boundary conditions + other solver settings so it does not matter whether you have .msh or .cas file. What can matter is RAM (and patience too ) , so if mesh file is large, it will take some time and needs more memory.

Thanks for the reply. It must just be my file. I'm getting an error when I try to import it with ICEM.

I will get the exact error code when I am back in the labs tomorrow, and keep looking for answers and/or start a more relevant thread.

Cheers!

One more thing, if directory name is too long it will give you problem. To check whether it is a problem of directory name copy that file to D: or E: and read file.

Hello,

Thanks for the help. I have got this specific problem fixed (user error) - now I just need to iron out a few other bugs...

Cheers!

It was my fault. I went through everything again with a colleague and found the issue. I have tidied up the directory structure and file names to help with the next phase though.
