[ICEM] Low mesh quality and how to improve the orthogonality?

Hello, everyone.

I am working on the 3D simulation of the droplet evaporation process. I have tried the structured mesh for many times. However, the mesh quality ,especially the orthogonality ,is bad because the contact angle is very large and it leads to the computation divergence.
Here are some screenshots of scan planes of volume mesh and blocks I tried.




I created two different geometries in order to improve the orthogonality, but I don't know how to make it. attachments are the geometry files.

- Why don't you smooth your mesh? Using Laplace method.........
- Alternatively change the geometry.

Hi Yikun,

could you try to make a ring of sweeped blocks around the base of the droplet?

A sweep block is a semi-structured block where one face can be unstructured which is extruded to create prismatic layers. It would allow to mesh the corner with tetras until the gap is big enough for hexas again.

The feature to do this can be found in blocking > edit block > convert block type.

I believe, there is also some information on block types in the manual.

Thank you for your advice. I searched the tutorial manual and found something about "sweep blocks". what you mean is something like the picture shows?

I am confused about "make a ring of sweeped blocks ". Do I need to change blocks created before and create a block like a ring around the base of the droplet?

Hi Yikun,

after checking the help article, I noticed that sweep is an irregular verb... so it is called "swept block" correctly. You can find it in ICEM help > Help Manual > Blocking > Edit Block > Convert Block Type

A swept block is a type of mapped block. Therefore you do need a blocking structure. The face you select when changing the block type to swept will become unstructrured. The meshing for this face will be controlled with the global mesh parameter. I guess, you would have to use trianglar elements in that cavity. A blocking like that:

So it would be necessary to alter your blocking structure a little bit. You might can get some blocks out of VORFN back to save some work.
