Hello Ansys forum users and happy new year,
I am currently working on my bachelor thesis with emphasis on FE-Analysis of a prosthetic socket. The model i have to analyze comes from a scanned .STL file of a prosthetic socket. I already managed to convert the .STL file to a solid body using FreeCad. The model still consists of many (ca. 40.000) triangular elements. Therefore I cant work with the model as it is right now. Is it possible, to connect all the elements automatically using spaceclaim or design modeler? Or is it even possible to mesh and analyze the model properly as it is (consisting of 40.000 or more elements/faces). Thank you in advance and greetings Alex |

Dear Alex
I have a an MRI image consisted of 80000 facets making solid and smooth with FreeCAD and change geometrically using Solidworks. I suggest to use ICEM for grid generation. However, for geometrical correction or extension I suggest to use Solidworks 2016 and upper versions in which you can import files including with 250000 maximum faces. Sure! you can use ICEM (a little bit tricky to working with) for grid generation using stl file. Although I am not a professional user of ICEM, I would be in touch if you need help. "May be the Force be with you" Best regards, Mohsen |

Hello Mohsen,
thank you for your fast answer! I already managed to create a mesh out of the .stl file using freecad. So the next step right now would be to smoothen the surfaces right? I feel like it will be problematic to do a fe-analysis of a body with 40000 faces I will try to use ICEM to solve the problem, thanks for the tip. Do i have to recreate the body using ICEM? Regards Alex |

As far as I know, NO!!! If you refine and smooth your stl file with freecad (I suggest to try the Autodesk meshmixer to fill and smooth any tiny gap) automatically you need no extra geometry repairing however t is possible to do such process in ICEM. For splitting your stl file to separate surfaces, please send me an email to forward a quick step by step tutorial to you. Good luck! Mohsen |
