How to export Icem mesh to Cfx?

Hi everyone!
My problem is quite simple but i'm new to Icem so i have difficulties only. Anyway, i created a 2d mesh in Icem and i want to use it Cfx but i cannot manage to output it. I always get an error messege that says: "no volume elements found.child process exited abnormally". I tried to extrude the mesh by one layer only as my simulation would be 2D but i got the same error again. Thanks in advance |

CFX requires 3 elements thick i believe
search the forum there is a description and I also think a tip about export to fluent, importing that into Pre and it does it automatically????? Quote:

Ansys CFX has no 2D Solver. Fluent on the other hand does...
CFX requires a volume mesh with at least ONE cell in the direction of symmetry. ICEM can extrude your 2D mesh to 3D. |

First, thank you guys for the quick answers, i really do appreciate them.
Unfortunatly, i have to use cfx for solving my assignement, fluent is not good for me. The other thing: how to create a 3d mesh from a 2d mesh? I created a 2d geometry then the blocks and the mesh, all this in 2d. After this, a selected extrude mesh and extruded it. I thought this would result in a volume mesh but as it apperas it wouldn't. Please help me out. Thank you again. |

You can export a 2d mesh to fluent format (msh). When imported to cfx it will automatically extrude it one element for you

Export as .msh (Fluent mesh) and import into CFX-Pre. You will get the mesh one element extruded by CFX for you.
Or you can extrude mesh in edit mesh tab. Convert pre-mesh to unstructured mesh and use edit mesh tab. Last edited by Far; February 22, 2013 at 10:43. |

I got it working, thanks everyone.
Another problem came up: when i imported the cfx5 file into cfx-pre and i tried to determine boundary conditions i cannot select any of the surfaces, i only have one thing to choose, it's called: Primitive 2d. Is it possible that in icem i somehow create surfaces that actually appear in cfx-pre and i can select them as inlet, outlet, wall etc. ? Huge thanks to every one of you. |

When i create the cfx5 file i got this messege in the log:
"WARNING : family SOLID has mixed of 2D and 3D elements, this is not allowed in CFX-5.". Do you have any idea what problem can it cause and how can i help it? Thank you. |

Doesn't work.
I also tried something else: I started cfx from workbench and created the geometry in mechanical. After that i started meshing and inserted mesh method then selected uniform quad, and switched write icem cfd file to interactive. After all of this i created the mesh in icem and converted pre-mesh to unstructured mesh at the end. Even so when i close icem, in workbench meshing i'm stuck with the old mesh. How can i preserve the mesh i created in icem? I really don't know what to do. Thank you. |
