TitlePost-Doc in CFD of lidar-based wind field measurements
CategoryPostDoc Position
EmployerFluid Energy Group, Kindai University
LocationJapan, Hiroshima
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateFriday, January 31, 2025
Description:
Project description:
The aim of this project is to improve the accuracy of turbulence measurements using Doppler lidars. The candidate will develop a framework for simulating profiling lidar-based wind field measurements in our large-eddy simulations (LES) tool which has been developed in OpenFOAM environment. The simulation framework will be used to identify the sources of errors while computing turbulence statistics from lidar measurements. In the next step, correction method based on statistical turbulence models will be developed and validated.

The project is part of the international collaboration involving Kindai University, Ashikaga University in Japan, and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Denmark.

Primary responsibilities:
  • Extend the simulation tool to simulate profiling lidar-based wind field measurements
  • Develop correction method(s) to improve the accuracy of lidar-based turbulence measurements
  • Closely interact with our collaborators
  • Write scientific papers and present the research results at national and international conferences

Requirements:
  • PhD degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline
  • Proven track record in working with computational fluid dynamics. Significant experience with DNS or LES or RANS is the requirement
  • Coding experience in C, C++ or Fortran for numerical modelling. Experience in Python is desirable
  • Experience with OpenFOAM, High Performance Computing (HPC), Doppler lidar measurement is desirable.

Salary scale: Comparable to the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships (standard program) and covers health insurance and other benefits.

Contract period: Initially for two years. Can be extended for additional one year.

Start date: February 2025 (or as early as feasible)

Kindai University is one of the largest Universities in Japan, with campuses spread all over the country. Our campus is in Hiroshima prefecture. Fluid Energy Group is a part of Mechanical Engineering Department at the School of Engineering. We have access to the state-of-the-art HPC facilities and several field measurements facilities through our collaborators. We also have multiple wind tunnels which are mainly used for aerodynamics and wind energy study.
