Description: | |
We are seeking a postdoctoral candidate for at least a 2-year position in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Naval Postgraduate School in beautiful Monterey, California. Expected start date is January 2025. Project Description: The U.S. Navy is developing a new atmospheric modeling system based on the Nonhydrostatic Unified Model for the Atmosphere (NUMA). The project involves research in the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for atmospheric modeling for both terrestrial and space-weather applications. The candidate will develop algorithms and new technologies into the NUMA and xNUMA models. These models use continuous and discontinuous Galerkin methods on tensor-product elements in both 2D (quadrilaterals) and 3D (hexahedra) and contain a suite of advanced time-integration strategies which includes explicit, fully-implicit, and implicit- explicit methods, as well as advanced iterative solvers and preconditioners. The position is contingent on the availability of funds. Background Required: The successful applicant MUST hold a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Scientific Computing, or a related engineering discipline. The ideal applicant would have knowledge of fluid dynamics, finite element methods, time-integration methods, high-performance computing (e.g., MPI and OpenACC/OpenMP), and experience with object-oriented programming. Previous knowledge in geophysical fluid dynamics is an advantage but not a strict requirement. Eligibility: Both national (within the United States) and international candidates are welcome to apply. Candidates should have received their PhD within 5 years of the start date (January 2020 or later). How to Apply: Send an email to Prof. Francis X. Giraldo at fxgirald@nps.edu with the subject heading “NPS Postdoc Position Applicant”. In this email, please include a single PDF with a cover letter stating how your background fits this position and a CV containing 3 references and their email addresses. Once we select the candidate, they will work closely with Prof. Giraldo to submit a proposal delineating the work that the candidate will do. This proposal will be submitted to the National Research Council (NRC). Application Deadline: Applications received prior to September 1, 2024 will receive full consideration. We will accept applications past this date but expect to begin interviews the 2nd week in September 2024. Salary and Benefits: The successful applicant will be vetted by the National Research Council (NRC). As such, NRC and NPS have set the salary at $67,000 per year. There is also a $15,000 contribution for health benefits paid by NPS, up to $20,000 for relocation costs, and at least $3,000 per year in travel funds to attend conferences.
