The Iowa State University’s Computational Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics Laboratory (ISU CAAL) is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join a research project investigating aerodynamically generated ultrasound.

Project Description:

Using a combined computational and experimental approach, this exciting project will explore aerodynamic whistles to generate ultrasound for bat deterrence in wind farms. The successful candidate will develop and utilize advanced computational aeroacoustics (CAA) simulations to predict noise generation while designing and conducting wind tunnel experiments for validation.

Desired Qualifications:

• A strong background in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• An MS (or equivalent) focusing on aeroacoustics or computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Exceptional candidates straight after a B.S. degree will also be considered.
• Proven experience in performing CAA simulations using established software packages (e.g., OpenFOAM,  StarCCM+).
• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python for data analysis and post-processing.
• Experience with experimental techniques in aeroacoustics, including anechoic chamber and wind tunnel testing and data acquisition.
• Familiarity with CAD software and experience in rapid prototyping of test models.
• Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
• A strong work ethic,  self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and collaborate with people nationally and internationally.
