TitlePhD student in Multiphase Flows
CategoryPhD Studentship
EmployerUniversity of Magdeburg
LocationGermany, Magdeburg
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateSunday, July 21, 2024
Description:
At the Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering (www.mvt.ovgu.de) we are a group
of enthusiastic researchers with intensive research activities in the numerical
modelling of multiphase flows. As part of our research on particle-laden flows,
we study the complex behaviour of dispersed particles in incompressible and
compressible turbulent flows, particle-turbulence interactions, the influence
of particle shape as well as applications featuring particle-laden flows.

The objective of the advertised position is to develop novel computational
models to describe particle-laden flows where the particles have complex shapes.
This will include performing detailed numerical studies with our in-house CFD
code using direct numerical simulation (DNS) of flows with particles, as well as
the development of a new model to describe the inter-particle and particle-flow
interactions. The new model will then be implemented in our in-house CFD code to
simulate the transport of particles in flows at larger scales.

With this position, you do not only have the opportunity to obtain a PhD, but
also build a professional network in the scientific community and relevant
industries.

Job description:

- Design, execution, and analysis of analytical and numerical studies of the behaviour of particles in fluid flows
- Derivation, implementation, and analysis of models to predict the behaviour of many particles in flows
- Participation in the development of our in-house simulation tools in C and with MPI

Requirements:

- MSc degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aeronautical engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline
- Track record in working with physical models and numerical methods
- Experience with coding (e.g. C, C++, Fortran or Python) is highly desirable
- Experience in computational fluid dynamics, especially of direct numerical simulations or discrete element methods, is desirable
- Fluent command of written and spoken English is required
