A postdoctoral researcher position is available immediately in the Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Department at the University of Pittsburgh. The position is available for one year and can be renewed for an additional year upon satisfactory performance. 

The postdoctoral scholar is expected to conduct research as part of a National Science Foundation grant to investigate turbulence in long-lived, very stable atmospheric boundary layers, which are commonly observed in polar regions, using direct numerical and large-eddy simulations.  In the very stable regime, turbulence manifests itself intermittently in patches. The source of these sporadic turbulence activities and conditions that promote such events remain poorly understood and challenges turbulence parameterizations. The project is expected to produce a better characterization of turbulence and a quantitative classification scheme to account for the global intermittency in long-lived stable boundary layers.

The ideal candidate is expected to have a strong background in computational fluid dynamics and turbulence. Experience with flow stability analysis, C/C++ programming and GPU computing using CUDA is desirable.
Applicants must have or about to earn a Ph.D. degree in mechanical, aerospace, computational science and engineering, atmospheric sciences or applied mathematics with a strong academic record as evidenced by relevant course work, publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or conference papers. The annual salary for this position is $58,000 plus health benefits and professional travel funds to present research findings at major conferences.
