The Mechanical Engineering Department (MIE) at the University of Illinois-Chicago 
is seeking applications for highly motivated PhD students to conduct research in 
the area of complex fluid mechanics and fluid dynamics. 

The positions will start either in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024.

Applicants are expected to have a strong background in fluid mechanics and fluid 
dynamics. Candidates with expertise in particle-laden, suspensions, polymer flows, 
and flow over and through porous structures are preferred. Computational 
methods/CFD and/or hands-on experience in fluid mechanics and in technologies such 
as particle image velocimetry (PIV) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) 
measurements, MATLAB, and Machine shop experience are plus. Excellent 
communication and written skills are required along with demonstrated success in 
previous academic research. Additionally, the selected candidates will be expected 
to oversee undergraduate and master students, collaborate with the team members, 
write reports, and publish peer-reviewed journal articles. 

The appointment includes a stipend, full tuition, and benefits. Outstanding
