Thermal Systems Research Group, headed by Dr. Anurag Goyal in the mechanical engineering department at IIT Delhi, invites applications for graduate student assistantship with the potential for conversion to a full-time PhD researcher position. We are looking for a candidate to join as soon as possible. Our group uses numerical and experimental methods to develop innovative thermal systems for applications in HVAC, building energy efficiency, waste heat recovery, and water purification and desalination systems. The multiscale research approach spans fundamental modeling using principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat and mass transfer to fabrication and experimental evaluation of prototype systems. A brief description of the project and the required qualifications are provided below. Project Description: Buildings consume a significant part of total energy in our economy (~30-40%), and a significant fraction of it is used for thermal end- uses. This project will enhance the energy efficiency of commercial by developing and demonstrating thermal energy storage (TES) technologies for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration applications. TES will benefit commercial buildings by improving the integration of renewable energy sources through peak load shaving and enhancing the resiliency of the buildings in the events of blackouts and brownouts. We will develop detailed models of different TES system configurations in this project. We will also demonstrate these technologies through lab-scale experiments and pilot installations. We will develop intelligent controls to optimize the deployment of energy storage assets. Candidate Qualifications: B.Tech or M.Tech in mechanical or energy engineering with a good academic record. Candidates with past research experience in thermal engineering or coursework will be preferred.
