In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM), also referred to as 3D printing,
has met a growing interest in various industrial sectors. Indeed, it offers
major advantages compared to conventional forming techniques such as : fast
prototyping, feasibility of geometrically complex parts... However, precise
control of the process is necessary in order to avoid specific defects in the
manufactured part such as spurious nucleation, cracks, poor surface
roughness. In this context, it is well known that heat and mass transfer
phenomena in the molten metal play a fundamental role. In this project, we
will work with an existing state of the art weld pool multiphysics numerical
model, implemented in the Cast3M Finite Element toolbox, which has been
validated in the case of the TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding process. We will
adapt it to deal with the case of additive manufacturing which involves
basically the same physical phenomena as in welding but with different process
parameters : higher energy density, faster scanning speed, porosity... These
physical parameter changes may in turn entail the use of more advanced
numerical methods such as 3D adaptive meshing that we intend to
explore. Furthermore, in order to ensure the soundness of the numerical model,
comparisons will be made with already available Selective Laser Melting
experiments previously carried out at CEA labs on two different materials : an
austenitic stainless steel and an aluminium alloy.

Qualifications : Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. degree and strong
background in multiphysics, in particular fluid mechanics, numerical

Practical information : The postdoc will be mainly based in CEA Saclay
(located at 20 km south-west of Paris) with some visits to Grenoble.

Time frame : Preferred start date on October/November 2021, one-year funding
(extendable to two-years), allow a two-months delay after submission.
