TITLE: Multi-scale analysis of a low pressure two-phase flow in a reactor 
subassembly design exemplary of Generation 4 concept

FRAMEWORK & OBJECTIVES:

The postdoctoral position targets to improve, through 3D simulations, the 
understanding on some key aspects of fluid mechanics for a low-pressure two-
phase flow, in a reactor subassembly design exemplary of  Generation 4 
concept. This R&D work will be performed at the REesearch Institute on Nuclear 
Systems for low carbon Energy – IRESNE, which is part of the French 
Alternative and Atomic Energies Commission – CEA.
A central point will be to simulate, with the NEPTUNE_CFD and TRIO-MC 
subchannel codes, some adiabatic air-water flows and to further analyze in 
depth the corresponding physics. Focus will be placed on interfacial friction 
and connected flow map determination, and will be supported by the 
possibilities opened by a recent development in the CFD code that targets an 
all flow regimes modeling (bubbly, slug-churn, etc.). As such, mechanical 
coupling of the phases at a hydraulic interface that features a large change 
of diameters will be investigated; predominance of an annular flow within the 
few millimeters hydraulic diameter of the pins bundle will be, with friction 
at wall, other topics of main interest.
In support to this work, some data from an experimental program (SENSAS) will 
be made available and some additional connections will be performed with data 
from the literature. The CFD work should provide local and/or unavailable 
information that could open possibilities for an upscaling of the modeling to 
system or subchannel approaches. 
The candidate is expected to have relevant skills on CFD and two-phase flow as 
well as a strong motivation for an R&D work on thermal-hydraulics physics.

NUMERICAL TOOLS: NEPTUNE-CFD, TRIO-MC, CATHARE, MESHER.

CANDIDATE BACKGROUND: PHD in the thermal-hydraulics field with relevant 
technical skills on CFD, CAD and meshing.

WORKING LANGUAGE: English or French.

PERIOD: - 12 months fixed-term contract (possibly renewed, once).
        - To be started ASAP, following the candidate availability. 

LOCATION: CADARACHE site. This research center, located in Southeast of FRANCE 
(at about 25 miles from the city of AIX EN PROVENCE, see MAP) has a long 
tradition in the in fission and fusion fields. It employs ~5k people among 
engineers and students and was chosen to be the construction site of the 
International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Hence, this 
opportunity of post-doctoral position will allow taking benefit of an 
international environment.
