The Computational Fluid & Structural Mechanics group (CFSMgroup) at the University 
of Calgary,, has multiple open fully-funded Ph.D. and 
M.Sc. positions in Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) Modeling for Marine/Ocean 

The project focuses on the development of advanced computational fluid-structure 
interaction framework for design and analysis of complex systems in marine and 
ocean engineering. The applications include ship hydrodynamics, marine propellers, 
and floating hydro-kinetic turbines. The project is supported by several grants 
from industry and governmental agencies. The student will work closely with other 
group members on simulating complex problems, including:

- free-surface and cavitating flows
- turbulent flows over complex hydrodynamic surfaces and rotating machines
- analysis of the composite structures using isogeometric techniques
- wave modeling and fluid-structure coupling

The student will use in-house code, suitable for large-scale computing, that 
adopts finite element and IGA based discretization and is built on Variational 
Multi-Scale (VMS) and Stabilized techniques for fluid mechanics, and thin-shell 
Kirchhoff-Love formulation for multilayer composite structures. The application of 
the Machine Learning techniques and GPU-accelerated computing will also be

The potential candidates should have:

- very good academic standing from previous degrees
- a strong background in numerical methods and fluid mechanics
- prior experience with structural modeling or completed courses in continuum 
- prior experience with turbulence modeling and/or analysis and/or theory (or 
completed courses in turbulence)
- experience in developing numerical models, codes, and computation algorithms
- experience with CFD using FEM or FVM
- strong hands-on experience with computing in Fortran, C/C++, Python, or other 
- familiarity with at least one mesh generation tool (Gmsh, ANSA, Pointwise, or 
- experience with parallel computing (e.g. MPI, CUDA)
- strong interest and self-motivation to perform cutting-edge research and conquer 
challenges in real-world engineering and to publish high-impact papers.
