This announcement concerns a job opening in the framework of a recently launched
project on urban physics modeling. The project’s purpose is to predict the
environmental impact of the built environment. In particular, you will be
researching the CFD-based simulation of microclimate, focusing on reducing energy
consumption in buildings and mitigating urban heat island effects in major cities
in Europe and Asia.
Tasks:
- Work in a collaborative environment while showing initiative and autonomy
- Quickly become a reference point in the project for meso- or microscale modeling
of urban climate
- Plan, implement and maintain outdoor climate monitoring systems
- Analyze, visualize and interpret large spatio-temporal data files produced by
measurement, remote sensing or numerical simulation
- Publish research results in leading journals, present results at national and
international conferences, and work with industry to test and evaluate research
results
- Contribute to writing proposals, securing funding and leading research projects
and tasks
Required qualifications/skills:
- A completed university degree in Meteorology, Geographic Sciences, Environmental
Engineering, Mechanical / Thermal Engineering, or a related field
- Doctorate preferred, MSc with several years of relevant experience will also be
considered
- Good knowledge of advanced scientific programming (e.g., Python, Fortran, C/C++,
R, MATLAB/Simulink)
- A sound understanding of the basic physics of flow and turbulence,
thermodynamics and statistics, preferably applied to the urban climate and/or the
built environment
- Fluency in verbal and written English
Desired qualifications/skills:
- Experience in mesoscale (especially WRF including UCM) and microscale (e.g.,
ENVI-met or PALM-4U) climate modeling software as well as GIS software (e.g.,
QGIS)
- Knowledge of the Linux operating system and of high-performance computing
- Prior publications in peer-reviewed journals
The applicant should provide a comprehensive CV including the contact details of
at least two references (one of whom must be the thesis supervisor), as well as a
cover letter addressing the main requirements of the position.
2-year contract. Renewal possible.
39 hours per week.
Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector
collective wage agreement (TVöD).
In case of identical qualifications preference will be given to severely disabled
candidates. We would like to point out that the chosen job title also includes the
