Job Record #16661
TitlePostdoc in LB study of CO2 trapping
CategoryPostDoc Position
EmployerBrunel University
LocationUnited Kingdom, London
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateThursday, August 06, 2020
Applications are invited for an EPSRC-funded project titled
``Multiphysics and multiscale modelling for safe and feasible CO2 capture and storage''.
The research team at Brunel will be in collaboration with Imperial College and CCS industrial partners.
The successful applicant will receive a starting annual salary of £33,797 (or above) plus London Weighting.
The post is for one year in the first instance and can be continued based on performance.
The successful applicant will join the internationally recognised researchers
in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering & Institute of Energy Futures, Brunel University.

This work package aims to understand optimal working conditions
for CO2 injection, maximal storage and minimal leaking, in particular with H2 as a contaminant.
High-fidelity lattice Boltzmann simulation techniques will be developed
to investigate CO2 trapping characteristics, e.g. its dispersion or deposition in porous media,
mimicking flow conditions under deep earth surfaces such as saline aquifers.
A better understanding of the flow physics under typical trapping regimes will be used to guide injection engineering
to achieve better efficiency with minimal energy input and minimal leakage occurrence.

Applicants will be expected to recently receive a PhD degree in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering or Physics discipline.
Experience in

- applications and development of lattice Boltzmann approaches; and/or
- computational research in carbon capture and storage; and/or
- computer code development & parallel computation

will be seen as unique advantages. In addition, s/he should be
highly motivated and able to work both independently and in a team
in collaborate with internal and external academic and industrial colleagues.

Although a postdoctoral research fellow will be prioritised for the post,
an early-stage researcher who is willing to join the research team as a PhD student is also possible.
Outstanding academic performance in his/her undergraduate degree
(UK First/Distinction equivalent with an Engineering or Physics degree) would be a prerequisite.
