Salary: £27,511 to £40,322 per annum (pro rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience

Applications are invited for a researcher to lead computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling within an 
EU Cleansky 2 project ‘Advanced Cavities Using High Resolution Additive (ACUHRA). ACUHRA is a multi-
institutional research project focused on delivering key technical advancements to the EU aerospace 
sector that will advance knowledge and control of flow in Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) seals and cavity 
geometries using additive manufacturing (AM). The vision is to use AM and advanced CFD methods to 
produce lightweight and innovative components for swirl control to facilitate the design of more efficient 
low pressure turbines.

A key part of the research is to use state-of-the-art high fidelity CFD to inform and assess swirl control 
design concepts including the use of large eddy simulation (LES) and hybrid Reynolds Averaged Navier-
Stokes (RANS) – LES methodologies. In addition to this, design concepts will be assessed and improved 
using advanced optimisation techniques including adjoint methods and experience in such approaches 
would be very beneficial. Once designed, components will be manufactured using AM and tested 
experimentally by a project partner. As such this is a highly collaborative project and will involve working 
with partner institutions including industry.

The successful candidate will join the Gas Turbines and Transmissions Research Centre (G2TRC) within 
the Faculty of Engineering as part of a team of researchers involved in CFD modelling activities across a 
wide range of project and application areas. They will primarily work in close collaboration another 
university who are undertaking the experimental studies in this project. For the proposed activities an 
experienced researcher will bring significant CFD practice and optimisation experience. Experience of CFD 
modelling using Fluent or similar software and modelling of gas turbine seals and cavities would be very 

Candidates must hold a Degree, or equivalent in a relevant area and a PhD or equivalent (or shortly due to 
complete) in engineering, applied mathematics or a related subject area, with a major component in using 
Computational Fluid Dynamics. Key to the success of the application will be the ability of the applicant to 
demonstrate that they can undertake complex CFD studies. Practical application of CFD in particular, 
optimization methods, and meshing systems. The ability to work in a team, and interact professionally with 
collaborators is essential as this project will operate in close collaboration with colleagues in industry and 
at another university.

This full-time (36.25 hour) post is available immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract until
