Description:
The production from capture fisheries and aquaculture has been an important food 
resource for human beings. However, it has been reported that the capture 
fishery production keeps relatively static since the late 1980s, while 
aquaculture is growing fast. Overfishing has already been a major threat for 
many species. Therefore, aquaculture has been chosen as a sustainable way to 
meet the demand for the food, just like the transition from hunting and 
gathering to agriculture for land-based food production systems. Locating well-
run operations out in the ocean could produce sustainable food and protect wild 
stocks from overfishing. However, it has many challenges including strong 
environmental effects. To deal with this problem, many solutions have been 
introduced. For example, placing the fish farms on pre-build structures or make 
the fish farms as floating concrete structures. However, these suggestions are 
costly. Another idea is to put breakwaters around the net cage. However, the 
introduction of such breakwaters would alter the loads and responses on the 
structure. It is required to show how to calculate these forces and 
displacements, and how they are changed when the breakwater is placed around the 
net cage. As a new approach, it is suggested a comprehensive study will be 
conducted for the offshore fish-farms, including all different engaged 
parameters simultaneously.

Desirable skills: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), mathematical and physical 
modelling, fluid structure interaction, turbulent flow, solid-fluid interaction.
