Greetings,

I would like to show a case study visualizing results of a CFD analysis inside virtual reality platforms. Simulation of urban pollution is visualized inside Cave 3D and Oculus Rift platforms. Workflow includes exporting analysis domain and results into real time 3D rendering platforms, while preserving scale and orientation and displaying calculated results.

Workflow is suitable for transferring various types of results, but due to the immersive nature of VR platforms, participants feel most comfortable inside domains that they can walk through, such as city streets with pollution analysis, rooms with HVAC analysis etc.

Do you think there is a need for this type of immersive vis in CFD results?

Yes, there is definitely a use for VR for visualizing CFD results. We use it for exploratory work and for demos in our 6-projector CAVE, using ParaView, Unity3D, and our own homegrown C++/Qt/OpenGL visualizer.

The advantage of VR for exploratory work is that users get to leverage their intuitive skills for 3D navigation---just moving their bodies and heads through the volume allows them to quickly peruse and isolate features of the flow without having to select and modify viewpoints or cutting planes as would be required in traditional, monitor-based analysis software. The typical density of flow features results in occlusion problems in traditional 2D displays and makes CFD an *ideal* candidate for VR.
