Prevent intersection of upper and lower side of airfoil

Hello everybody,
I want to optimize a 2D Naca0018 to maximize lift. However, after several design evaluations the upper and lower side of the airfoil start to intersect with each other (see fig attached). I tried to prevent this with constraints in the thickness ( 1/4_THICKNESS > ..., 1/2_THICKNESS > ... and so on) ... but this didn't work out ... the airfoil sides still overlap at certain designs. Sometimes this leads to diverging in the direct simulation sometimes not, and the final design consist of 2 individual smaller airfoils. What is a good way to prevent this? Which constraints to use that don't restrict the optimization process too much... Thank you very much! (PS: Also, the optimizations seems to ignore the specified upper and lower bounds for the design variables, which lie at 1.5 and -1.5. Version SU2_V5.0 Raven) |

Can you also provide us your .cfg file, history_project file and the log files of the direct and adjoint simulations of the last design (I do not mean the last line search design ). Thank you in advance! Kind regards, Floris |
