Hello!

We have a lsf cluster at my job which we use to run simulations. We are interested in setting up remote access to the simulations, in order to check them while they are running and, occasionally, to have a GUI access to mesh while using more cores than our personal workstations have.

For security reasons, the all the comunications from and to the cluster are cut, and the way we access it to submit jobs is by ssh-ing into a local machine (which is simply a docker interface) and submitting jobs with bsub from there.

The general procedure for remote viewing seems to require setting up a direct ssh tunnel, but in my (admittedly scarce) understanding of network communications, this doesn't seem to be possible.

Does anyone know how this problem could be solved?

Thanks in advance,
Leonardo

Let's go through some basics. If you have a workstation and the colleague sitting right next to you has a workstation, do you know how to use the Star client on your workstation to view a simulation running on their workstation?

I haven't actually tried that out, but I do know the general procedure and I found some guides about that.

From my understanding, the short of it is:
  • Launch a simulation and start a server
  • Connect to the server (using a passwordless ssh)

The act of setting up the passwordless ssh looks a bit complex, but every guide has a very good step-by-step explanation of what to do, so I should be able to set it up.
