Hi everyone,

I am doing research in the field of oscillating foil which will propel the ship. I am using STAR-CCM+. I am able to give the motion to foil when it is a rigid one, using overset mesh. Now I want to introduce flexibility to the foil.

Please guide me how to do this. Thanks in advance.

Are you looking to self-prescribe the flexibility/deformation of the foil? If so, there is a tutorial in the tutorial guide which goes through deformation of a oscillating pipe that might be of use. It's under tutorials -> Solid Stress -> Fluid-Structure Interaction: Vibrating Pipe. Hope this helps!

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for the reply.

I am doing open water study with the foil alone. So, the input is given as a rotation to foil. My foil should deform while fluid is exerting force on it.

Hey,

First thing first, check that both domain are correctly defined and that Star CCM+ does understand that the propeller and the fluid are in contact. To be sure, I would suggest you substract the propeller from the fluid domain and check the "contact" node once you imported the geometry.

Then, you can define a new continuum for the solid physics, activate the "Solid Stress" model with a linear isotropic law for example.

You should activate the "Fluid Structure Interaction" option and then indicate where are the matching boundaries, called "Interfaces". This function allow the program to compute solid displacements from fluid loads and vice-versa.

I suggest you give a look at StarCCM's tutorials, they are really instructive :
Help -> SimCenter StarCCM+ -> Simulating Physics -> Solid Stress -> Modelling FSI.
