I have read the user guide for the prism layer mesher but I am still not able to understand how the prism layer mesher works in starccm. Does the subsurface that is generated (before the core mesher can take over) has the same surface triangulation/surface mesh as the main surface? There is noting mentioned about how the surface mesh is handled when using the prism layer mesher.

It won't have necessarily the same triangulation but it will be very close. The subsurface is dependent on the surface mesh being good quality, though.
