FGM table in STAR CCM+

The starccm+ manual states that when using the FGM model, a single point is recommended for the progress variable variance, i.e. an assumed delta function PDF for the progress variable. Can someone explain why? Does this refer to both 0D and 1D reactor types, or just to the 0D case?
