I am quite new to the program and attempting the backwards facing step tutorial. after making the step geometry itself , I made a sketch and extrusion(volume) for mesh refinement however i dont see this separately in the body tree. When I click on the step geometry body name, both the backward step and the new volume are highlighted.

I tried naming the step beforehand and then making the part but the same problem occurs. I also tried changing the extrusion method from up to face to blind. I dont see what else I can do.

How do I make these 2 into separate bodies so I use this volume further down the line. Assistance with this would be humbly appreciated.

I don't use 3D cad a lot, but I believe your extrusions merge by default. Edit your second extrusion and change the interaction from merge to imprint... I think.
